How you can be led by the Holy Spirit following the Spirit

Be Spirit conscious

*Realize that you are born of the spirit

3 Jesus answered him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God."  4 Nicodemus said to him, "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?"  5 Jesus answered, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.  6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.  (John 3:3-6, ESV)

*Keep the flesh under

But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.  (1 Corinthians 9:27, ESV)

*Walk in the spirit

For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.  (Romans 8:6, ESV)

*Pray in the spirit

But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.  (Galatians 5:16, ESV)

If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.  (Galatians 5:25, ESV)

For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit.  (1 Corinthians 14:2, ESV)

For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unfruitful.  (1 Corinthians 14:14, ESV)

Listen to the inward witness

*The spirit communicates with your spirit

The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,  (Romans 8:16, ESV)

*We have the witness within

Whoever believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself. Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has borne concerning his Son.  (1 John 5:10, ESV)

*Listen for a check in your spirit: intuition, hunch, premonition

9 Since much time had passed, and the voyage was now dangerous because even the Fast was already over, Paul advised them,  10 saying, "Sirs, I perceive that the voyage will be with injury and much loss, not only of the cargo and the ship, but also of our lives."  (Acts 27:9-10, ESV)

*What does your heart say

for whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything.  (1 John 3:20, ESV)

*He shall direct your path

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.   6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.   (Proverbs 3:5-6, ESV)

Judge all things by the word

*Beware: Satan quotes scripture also!

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.  (Matthew 4:1, ESV)

*Not every voice is of God

There are doubtless many different languages in the world, and none is without meaning,  (1 Corinthians 14:10, ESV)

*Prove all things.

but test everything; hold fast what is good.  (1 Thessalonians 5:21, ESV)

*Check it out, The word

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.   (Psalm 119:105,
ESV)

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.  (Romans 12:2, ESV)

How to sharpen your spirit

*Meditate on the word

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.  (Joshua 1:8, ESV)

*Put it to practice

But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.  (James 1:22, ESV)

*Always give the word first place

20 My son, be attentive to my words; incline your ear to my sayings.   21 Let them not escape from your sight; keep them within your heart.   22 For they are life to those who find them, and healing to all their flesh.   (Proverbs 4:20-22, ESV)

*Instantly obey your spirit

For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.  (Romans 8:14, ESV)

The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,  (Romans 8:16, ESV)

*Pray in the spirit without ceasing

12 Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God.  13 And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual.  14 The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.  (1 Corinthians 2:12-14, ESV)
