What is Atonement?

Covering of sins old testament

To atone for something is to: compensate for, make amends for, pay the penalty, redress, make up for.

Atonement: settlement, reparation

For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it for you on the altar to make atonement for your souls, for it is the blood that makes atonement by the life.  (Leviticus 17:11, ESV)

and from Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood   (Revelation 1:5, ESV)

Remission

A complete wiping  out, as though there had never been only used in connection with the new birth.
It happens once and for all
Sinners who believe receive remission of sins

To him all the prophets bear witness that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name."  (Acts 10:43, ESV)

Remission of sins for repentant sinners

And Peter said to them, "Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.  (Acts 2:38, ESV)

to open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.'  (Acts 26:18, ESV)

that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the
knowledge of him,  (Ephesians 1:17, ESV)

Believing sinners become brand new. Old things are wiped away

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 
(2 Corinthians 5:17, ESV)

Forgiveness

* Any Christian can sin

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 
(1 John 1:8, ESV)

*Sin breaks fellowship but not the relationship

3 that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ.  4 And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete.  5 This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.  6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.  7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.  (1 John 1:3-7, ESV)

* Forgiveness belongs to Christian

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

*Forgiveness is the way back

1 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.  2 He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.

*We have an advocate with the Father

*Forgiveness is your for the asking

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Staying in fellowship

*Our fellowship with the Father and the Son and with one another

that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ.  (1 John 1:3, ESV)

*Walk in the light of the word

6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.  7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.  (1 John 1:6-7, ESV)

*Except you forgive

12 and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.   13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.   14 For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you,  15 but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

*Forgive one another

Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.  (Ephesians 4:32, ESV)

*Walk in love

and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.  (Romans 5:5, ESV)

*Never stay down always . seek forgiveness
